Asymmetrical Design

Asymmetrically offset spoke holes help equalize the spoke tension of a wheel build, while the symmetrical outer profile distributes impact forces throughout the entire rim rather than absorbing them by one side more than the other. CZR i30 rims feature asymmetrical spoke offset of 5mm.

Reinforced Spoke Beds

Additional carbon at each spoke bed improves overall rim strength and durability while also minimizing weight in areas where less strength, and therefore material, is needed.

4D Angled Spoke Holes

Molding spoke holes at an angle eliminates binding and lateral loading of the spoke and nipple interface. It also allows spoke tension to be more evenly dispersed on the nipple rather than loading one side more than the other. Allowing the spoke to depart the rim at a natural angle increases the longterm durability of both the spoke and nipple.

TCS Solid Strip

Durable nylon strip that lies between the rim and tubeless tape to prevent tubeless tape from pushing into the spoke holes and ensures a smooth interface between the tire and rim. The smooth surface makes it easier to mount a tire by preventing air from escaping around the bead at each indent during inflation. Solid Strip also protects the airtight system from puncture in the case of a broken spoke.

30mm inner width

Numbers tend to be a hard thing to agree upon in the world of mountain biking, but 30mm has become widely accepted as the perfect inner rim width for trail and enduro riding. Pairing this inner rim width with a 2.4-2.6" tire increases tire volume and sidewall support compared to traditionally narrower rims. The increased volume also allows riders to run lower tire pressures which translates to improved traction and comfort. Most modern mountain tires have beeb designed to provide the optimal profile on a 30mm rim.

Additional carbon at each spoke bed improves overall rim strength and durability while also minimizing weight in areas where less strength, and therefore material, is needed.

Spoke holes are drilled at an angle to match the natural spoke path between a rim and hub. Eliminates binding and lateral loading of the nipples to increase wheel durability.

Asymmetrically offset spoke holes create a stronger wheel by placing the holes more in line with the center of the hub and more evenly distributing spoke tension.

Sloped rim valley allows the bead of the tire to easily and smoothly move into place during installation and inflation.

Installed between the rim and tubeless tape to prevent tape from sagging at each spoke hole and make tire inflation easier while also preventing puncture from a broken spoke.

HOW DOES RIM WIDTH AFFECT TIRE VOLUME AND PROFILE?

Wider rims will cause a tire to also have a wider width, with more air volume within the tire and a flatter tire tread profile than designed for. As a general rule of thumb, a 2mm increase or decrease of inner rim width will result in a tire section width increase or decrease of 1mm. For example, our Nano 40 tire has a tire section width of 40mm on a 21mm inner rim width, however it will have a tire section width of 41mm on a 23mm inner rim width.

WHY DO CZR i23 RIMS HAVE A HOOKED BEAD WHILE CZR i30 ARE HOOKLESS?

CZR i23 rims feature a hooked bead because doing so provides a more dependable connection between the tire and rim when running a tire at the higher air pressures that are common with adventure road and gravel riding. CZR i30 rims feature a hookless bead because the smooth bead surface allows for more material to be used in an area when strength is incredibly important. Both CZR i23 and CZR i30 rims are compatible with any tires that comply with ETRTO standards.

WHICH TUBELESS VALVE LENGTH IS BEST FOR THESE RIMS?

All of our alloy rims work great with a 34mm valve stem. If you are using a deeper dish rim, like our CZR i23 rim, then we recommend the 46mm long valve stem. CZR i30 rims accept either length of valve.

ARE THERE TRICKS TO INSTALLING A TIRE ON AN ASYMMETRICAL RIM?

Asymmetrical rims feature a "short" and "long" side. It is helpful to always mount both sides of the tire onto the rim on the "short side" of the rim. The short side of the rim provides the shortest distance between the rim leg/bead and the valley of the rim. Once the first tire bead is completely on the rim, it can be pulled over the rubber portion of the valve and positioned at the deepest part of the rim valley. The other side of the tire can then be installed onto the rim with the least amount of resistance.

Now with Hydras

Just mounted up a set of Hydra equipped CZRs and they have a weeks worth of riding on them so far. I wanted more lateral stability under high cornering loads and the CZRs deliver without adding vertical harshness. I suck at corners and the CZRs find more traction at significantly higher lean angles than before using the same tires. On my scale the rear came in at 1001g and the front at 869g. Given the high environmental costs of carbon, I wanted to be sure I couldn’t find another alloy (or carbon) rim that has all the combined technologies (TCS, thicker bead walls, reinforced spoke beds, asymmetric offset, 4D drilling, competitive strength to weight) and lifetime guarantee. I don’t know if the layups are front/rear specific, but otherwise the CZRs leave very little on the performance table. The finish is stealthy, durable, and of exceptional quality. They’ve partnered with a great carbon manufacturer. One thing to note is that due to the offset, certain larger free flow style valves with may not be compatible with certain tire casings due to the size of the valve base crowding the bead wall. A torque cap option would be nice as well, but otherwise the Hydras are impressive. Knowing final assembly is happening an hour north of where I live is awesome, thank you Ed for the quality build!

CZR I30 Rims

I’ve been rocking the CZR I30 rims for months now and they’re definitely a worth while upgrade from my previous aluminum rims! The rims feel quick, lite and solid while not being too stiff at the same! Definitely a fan and have been enjoying them thus far!
