Dual I-Beam Support
Two vertical supports within the inner cavity drastically increase the strength and lateral stiffness of our KOM Tough rims. These additional reinforcements counteract spoke loads, which improves stiffness and minimizes deflection in rocky, unpredictable terrain.

Dependable 6069 Alloy
Many years of rim development and success have confirmed 6069 to be the perfect aluminum alloy blend for mountain bike rims. Our extensive testing shows other 6000-series alloy to be less ding-resistant, while stiffer 7000-series alloys result in a harsher ride feel and tend to increase pinch flats.

4D Angled Spoke Holes
Drilling spoke holes at an angle eliminates binding and lateral loading of the spoke and nipple interface. It also allows spoke tension to be more evenly dispersed on the nipple rather than loading one side more than the other. Allowing the spoke to depart the rim at a natural angle increases the longterm durability of both the spoke and nipple.

TCS Solid Strip
Durable nylon strip that lies between the rim and tubeless tape to prevent tubeless tape from pushing into the spoke holes and ensures a smooth interface between the tire and rim. The smooth surface makes it easier to mount a tire by preventing air from escaping around the bead at each indent during inflation. Solid Strip also protects the airtight system from puncture in the case of a broken spoke.

30mm inner rim width
Enduro and aggressive trail riders across the globe have adopted 30mm as the go-to size for tires in the most common widths of 2.4-2.5". Most trail and enduro tires are now designed to be installed on a 30mm rim and doing so will optimize the air volume, sidewall support and tire profile of those tires.

My 2014 Santa Cruz Bronson came with WTB ST i23 TCS rims with 2. 3 tires. I love the wider KOM Tough i30 rims with 2. 4 tires. The widest I could go for my frame. The freehub engagement is a lot sooner and smoother than my old hubs.

A really great rim

This rim is well thought out, and has some design features to correct issues aluminum rims have had over the years.

I'm a bike mechanic and a life long bike nerd. So here we go.

The Short: This rim is durable, bendable (better than brittle), sets up tubeless very easily, and not any heavier than similar products on the market. I think it looks good on a set of wheels as well.

The Long:

I've worked on or built a few of these rims at work. It didn't seem like the red solid strip was going to make a difference, nor did I think they next mechanic would choose to keep it on there, even if I did. So i have been discarding them. On a personal set of wheels I built, i chose to leave them on. One thing I was particularly impressed by is that installing the tire was not any more difficult than it should be, AND both tires seated up with a floor pump. I think the tape and Solid Strip may actually make a difference there! I deal with finiky tubless tires all day at work, so it's nice that my wheels at home won't give me trouble.

The angled spoke holes paired with the added material is solid. It was easy to tell which spoke hole was oriented which way, and the added material around the hole is a clever way to avoid eyelets and washers AND hopefully cracking at the spoke hole. I am interested to see how they hold up.

The area for improvement is a bit knit picky. The pinned seam at the top of the rim wasn't perfect on one of my rims. This is somewhat common for a biscuit weld, but it bugs me when I am truing a wheel and it can't be perfect at the seam. The other rim was lined up and straight.
